April is a great month for gardening. In fact, I think it’s one of my favourites. Getting the garden ready for the months ahead and planting all those seeds gives me a wonderful sense of optimism and excitement at seeing all those plants bring colour to the garden.
Today I’m sharing some jobs you can do in the garden now, as well as seeds you can sow.

Tidy and repair
Repair your lawn by digging out weeds, sowing new lawn, fertilising and raking any dead moss.
Keep on top of those weeds in the borders by digging them up from the root. You’ll be delighted in a couple of months when you’ve got lots of lovely flowers not being dwarfed by weeds! This is a good job to do before planting all those lovely flowers.
Trim back hedges, clean pots and tools and remember to open the greenhouse on those warmer days.
Grow your own
There are loads of lovely herbs and vegetables you can starting sowing outdoors now. Some of these include: carrots, peas, potatoes, dill, onions, shallots, beetroot, winter cabbages, broccoli, salad crops, radish, parsley, chard, and broad beans.
Flowers, glorious flowers!
There are so many flowers you can plant now that I recommend just going for it but remember to check the seed packet in case you need to start seedlings off indoors or under cover first.
Some of my favourites you can sow directly outside now include: daisies, lobelia, chrysanthemum, dahlia, geraniums, petunia, aquilegia, cornflower, morning glory, calendula, lavender, lupin, nasturtium, poppies and salvia to name but a few!
I hope this inspires you to get the wellies and gloves on and head out to the garden!

ReplyDeleteIt is so much more satisfying than buying expensive plant. The Little Bs love sowing seeds with their Daddy!

ReplyDeleteHubby B is more into the garden than I am but I get stuck in where there is digging involved weirdly. He does all the flowery stuff.
