Making Home Link Up #27: How to Make Coasters with Fimo Clay

Welcome to the #MakingHome weekly link up!

Be inspired by posts all about moving house, home decor, DIY, crafts, family activities, recipes, gardening and more. It’s all here under one roof at Mrs Crafty B’s.

The linky is open from Friday until Tuesday. Find out how to take part at the end of this post by Angela from Garden Tea Cakes and Me who is showing us how to make coasters with Fimo clay.
How to make coasters with Fimo clay
I have been discovering a new craft, having been inspired by a tutorial in a copy of Mollie Makes. It involved using oven clay, a product I have not worked with before. I was amazed by the variety of colours and effects available at my local craft shop. I thought clay was just clay, how wrong I was.

You will need:
  • At least 2 contrasting colours of FIMO clay
  • Small rolling pin
  • Greaseproof or baking paper
  • Baking tray
Make coasters with Fimo Clay
I used a green, translucent and a white pearlised clay from the FIMO range. I happily crafted away using 5 small balls of the clay, combining different qualities of the green with either the white or translucent. Using a centre ball I then rolled the remaining into long sausage shapes and wrapped them around the centre ball.

The tip in the magazine placed the clay onto a sheet of greaseproof/baking paper, this was also placed on the top. This prevented the clay from sticking to both the roller and the board. I used my cake decorating mini rolling pin to roll out the coaster, which once completed was moved (still on the paper) onto a baking tray. I was really surprised to find that there were no instructions on the clay for baking it in the oven. Still the internet saved the day, 30 minutes later at 100 degrees c my coasters were baked.

I was impressed with how they turned out, and I loved the effect of the mixed clays. I was expecting the clay once baked to be solid, but it was still flexible. Having not used FIMO before I am unsure if this is normal, I was expecting it to be rock hard.

  3. I was obsessed with Fimo when I was a kid. My Mum still has the fridge magnets I made with Fimo about 30+ years ago on her fridge! I must take some photos of them :) #makinghome

  8. Love those coasters - it's been a long time since I did anything with clay, I had one of those plastic potters wheels as a kid and couldn't stand the messiness. Think I'll stick to Ghost for my pottery needs!! :)

    1. HAHA Ghost!! I would LOVE to have a go at throwing pottery (not literally ;-) ) I would love to get stuck in there. People who do it make it look so easy but I bet it isn't!
